Pre-Practicum Thoughts

Today during cohort time my FA Yvonne announced what schools we will be going to for our praticum placements, next Thursday is our first day in the schools. I feel like I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. While I am slightly nervous to begin my praticum I’m also very excited to get into a classroom at a new school and be in a school where I only know one other person. I’ve very thankful that we have been placed in pairs it makes the first day and walking in for the first time easier. I’m very close to my parents so as soon as I knew where I was being placed I texted them and it turns out my mom did her long praticum at the same school 30 years ago! My family has joked about me following in my parents footsteps in becoming a teacher as my mom is an elementary school teacher and my father is a secondary principal. By attending UBC for my Teacher Education program I am following in my dad’s footsteps as this is where he did his 29 years ago as well and now I’m going to the school where my mom did her praticum. I love seeing this family connection and yet finally getting to ” step away” from my parents when in the schools as all of my volunteer time in schools has been with with family friends and sometimes volunteering in my mom’s classroom helping with field trips, working on dances for concerts. I can’t wait for next Thursday and to actually begin what I feel will be the biggest adventure of my year in teacher education. I feel like I have been looking forward to this for several years and have been counting down to it for months.
